SIA Licensing Explained: What It Means for Your Security Provider
When you hire a security company, the most important question to ask is: are your officers SIA-licensed? The Security Industry Authority (SIA) licence is the legal requirement that separates professional, vetted, trained security personnel from unregulated individuals operating without proper oversight. This guide explains what SIA licensing means, why it matters, and what to look for when verifying your security provider's credentials.
What Is the SIA?
The Security Industry Authority is the UK government-established regulator of the private security industry, set up under the Private Security Industry Act 2001. Its role is to ensure that individuals working in the security sector are fit and proper, appropriately trained, and operating within the law. The SIA issues licences to individuals and ACS (Approved Contractor Scheme) registration to security businesses.
Who Needs an SIA Licence?
Anyone working in the following roles as a contract security operative is required by law to hold a valid SIA licence: door supervisors, security guards, CCTV operators, vehicle immobilisers, close protection officers, and public space surveillance operators. Working without a valid licence — or employing someone without one — is a criminal offence under the Private Security Industry Act 2001.
What Does the Licensing Process Involve?
To obtain an SIA licence, an individual must pass an enhanced criminal record check, hold a relevant Level 2 qualification (such as Level 2 Award for Door Supervisors or Level 2 Award for Security Guards from an Ofqual-regulated awarding body), demonstrate a right to work in the UK, and pay the applicable licence fee. The SIA also requires licence holders to undertake first aid training. Licences are renewed every three years and are subject to ongoing compliance checks.
SIA ACS: What It Means for Security Companies
Beyond individual licensing, the SIA's Approved Contractor Scheme (ACS) provides an additional quality standard for security businesses. ACS-registered companies have demonstrated compliance with a set of operational and management standards that go beyond individual licensing. 247 Security Solutions holds SIA ACS registration, providing our clients with an additional layer of assurance about our operational standards.
How to Verify Your Security Provider's Credentials
You can check any security officer's SIA licence validity at any time on the SIA's free online licence checker at services.sia.homeoffice.gov.uk. Enter the licence number from the officer's badge and confirm the licence is current and valid for the role they're performing. For company-level accreditations — ACS, ISO, SafeContractor — ask your provider for documentary evidence and verify directly with the issuing body. 247 Security Solutions is delighted to provide all accreditation documentation upon request.
