The Challenge

Convenience retail is one of the highest-risk environments for theft. A prominent Brighton Budgens store, open long hours, serving high footfall, and stocking a broad range of ambient, chilled, and licensed goods, needed a professional, visible security presence that would deter both opportunistic shoplifting and more organised retail crime, while maintaining a welcoming atmosphere for legitimate customers.

The requirements were clear: SIA-licensed officers, professional conduct, and consistent coverage that could flex with the store's operating hours.

The Approach

247 Security Solutions deployed SIA-licensed retail security officers on a regular schedule aligned with the store's peak trading periods and highest-risk windows. Officers were deployed in uniform, providing maximum visible deterrence, and trained in 247's standard retail security protocol:

• Floor presence and deterrence. Officers maintain an active, visible presence on the shop floor, particularly around high-value stock areas, the entrance, and the checkout zone. This deters the majority of opportunistic theft before it occurs.

• Behavioural monitoring. Officers are trained to identify the specific behaviours associated with retail theft: unusual movement patterns, concealment activity, and the distraction techniques associated with group theft.

• Early intervention. Where suspicious behaviour is identified, officers intervene early and non-confrontationally, often resolving a situation before a theft takes place or an escalation becomes necessary.

• Stock area and delivery monitoring. Officers provide oversight of stockroom access and delivery points, reducing internal shrinkage as well as external theft.

• Incident response and reporting. Every incident produces a detailed digital incident report: a timestamped record of what occurred, who was involved, and any action taken. These reports are filed through 247's GPS-enabled staff management platform and made available to store management.

• Staff and customer safety. Officers are trained to de-escalate confrontational situations calmly. They provide reassurance to staff and customers, and liaise with police where an incident warrants emergency services involvement.

All officers deployed to the Budgens site are direct employees of 247 Security Solutions, never agency subcontractors, and hold a current SIA licence, Enhanced DBS clearance, and First Aid qualification.
